ABOUT LINK TRACKING WITH GOOGLE ANALYTICS
Google Analytics tracks what happens post-click (i.e., what happens on the site the user visits).
TRACKING LINKS IN YOUR EMAILS WITH GOOGLE ANALYTICS
Tracking email campaigns in Google Analytics is done using a process called link tagging.
SIMPLE LINKS
Step 1 - Insert your link
Here’s an example of a simple link that might appear in an email:
http://www.mysite.com/
Step 2 - Modify and add GA tag to the end of your link
To track it with Google Analytics copy the GA Tag below and paste it after your link:
?utm_source=MarketTraq&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=name-your-campaign&utm_content=describe-your-content
Note: Update the orange sections of the tag to name your parameters.
Here is an example of what it would look like for SitePreserver (MarketTraq's Cart Rescue email automation):
http://www.mysite.com/?utm_source=MarketTraq&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=SitePreserver&utm_content=Cart-Rescue
Step 3 - Repeat for all links
LINKS WITH "?" (QUERY STRING VARIABLES)
Step 1 - Insert your link with a Query String Variable
Here is a sample link with a Query String Variable at the end highlighted in blue.
http://www.mysite.com/?prodid=100
Note: You will know this because it starts with a "?" and then has an "=" which defines the variable.
Step 2 - Modify and add GA tag to the end of your link
To track this kind of link with Google Analytics copy the GA Tag below and paste it after your link:
&utm_source=MarketTraq&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=name-your-campaign&utm_content=describe-your-content
Note: Update the orange sections of the tag to name your parameters.
Here is an example of what it would look like for SitePreserver (MarketTraq's Cart Rescue email automation):
http://www.mysite.com/?prodid=100&utm_source=MarketTraq&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=SitePreserver&utm_content=describe-your-content
Step 3 - Repeat for all links
WHAT LINK WILL MY USER SEE?
When a user clicks through to your site from a tagged link in your email creative, GA removes the information from the URL and stores it in a cookie. Because the info now resides on the visitors machine (in the cookie) GA can associate all visitor actions (like conversions, transactions or Content consumed) with the email.
ABOUT GA TRACKING PARAMETERS
Utm_Source: Do not update. It should always be MarketTraq so it matches your other data (this is how all Auto-tagged Emails are named)
Utm_Medium: Do not update. It should always be Email (with a capital "E") so it matches your other data (this is how all Auto-tagged Emails are named)
Naming utm_Campaign
The Campaign parameter identifies the marketing campaign for this email. Here are some examples...
Example 1: &utm_campaign=Holiday-Sale
Example 2: &utm_campaign=Newsletter
Naming utm_Content
The Content parameter identifies the actual content of the email. This can help you determine which types of emails are working the best for a particular campaign.
Example 1a: &utm_campaign=Holiday-Sale&utm_content=50-Percent-Off-sale
Example 1b: &utm_campaign=Holiday-Sale&utm_content=buy-2-get-1-free
Example 2a: &utm_campaign=Newsletter&utm_content=top-10-posts-of-the-month
Example 2b: &utm_campaign=Newsletter&utm_content=weekly-newsletter
